Wooden blinds in an intelligent interior

« Back to blog

How to decorate a window in an exclusive way without losing the certainty that the final effect, apart from the visual one, will also have practical value? Achieving such a defined goal does not have to be difficult, because wooden blinds come to our aid. It is difficult to find a window cover that fits better with the furniture, floor panels and decorative elements available in the room, and yet these are not its only advantages.

What are wooden blinds?

Wooden interior shutters attract attention from the very first glance in their direction. What catches the eye is the material from which they are made. It is the wood, which is a natural material, that is described as exceptionally stylish. It improves the way the interior is perceived and at the same time becomes a guarantor of the impressive durability of the blinds.

Of course, people who decide to buy wooden blinds do not do it only because they want to raise the prestige in a specific room. It is no less important from their point of view that the blinds perform a number of important tasks. It is the blinds that allow you to regulate how much light will go inside. They also allow you to better control the temperature in it. And although it may seem at first that they will not be as effective protection against heat as gummed roller blinds, wooden blinds are free from many drawbacks of fabric covers. They do not heat up as quickly as they do, so you can count on them to keep your home cool more easily. Do they have disadvantages? The only limitation worth mentioning here is the one related to the way they are used. Wooden blinds cannot be placed outside the building, because changing weather conditions can quickly lead to their destruction.

Types of wooden blinds

There are at least several criteria for classifying wooden blinds. Most often, however, we are dealing with a division into two of their types:

  • classic wooden blinds,
  • bamboo wooden blinds.

Classic wooden blinds attract attention mainly because they seem a bit heavier than their bamboo counterparts. Their weight reaches up to three kilograms per square meter, which can be a problem if we do not choose one of the automatically controlled models. Of course, this does not mean at all that the weight of wood blinds should be viewed as a limitation. The manufacturer ensures that it is the weight that has a positive effect on the durability and reliability of this group of window covers.

The differences between wooden and bamboo blinds can also be seen by looking at the slats themselves. In the first case, we deal with slightly thicker elements, so after the blinds are rolled up, the slats take up a bit more space. They look great as a cover for large windows, although wooden blinds for a gazebo can also turn out to be a great idea. The thickness of the lamellas has a positive effect not only on their durability. It also contributes to the fact that the blackout effect is more spectacular. This is valuable information for all those people whose professional duties prevent them from sleeping at fixed times. When analyzing classic wood blinds, it is impossible not to mention that they also work perfectly as a heat insulator. They protect the room from excessive heating, but you can also count on them in winter, when you are afraid of the rapid leakage of heat to the outside of the building.

Bamboo blinds (in the photo above) are as good as classic wooden models when we analyze their appearance. However, it is impossible not to notice that they are much lighter than them. It is the lightness that makes it necessary to be more careful in protecting them from mechanical damage. However, it also contributes to the fact that they look beautiful as a cover for smaller windows and a decorative element in rooms with a small area. The slats of bamboo blinds are also thinner. They do not guarantee such perfect blackout as typical wooden models, but after rolling the blinds, they take up much less space without giving the impression of window covers dominating the room they are in. The lower thermal insulation that they are able to offer means that they usually go to small and slightly less intensively used rooms. They appear in the kitchen, they are also perfect shutters for bathrooms and offices.

The list of limitations to bamboo blinds is not large. However, it is worth remembering that they are made of pressed bamboo grass, and this way of making them has a certain impact on their appearance. The structure of the lamellas is not even, and it is difficult to speak of a uniform color. So if we dream of intensely white or gray blinds, a much better option will be to choose classic wooden models.

In which rooms can wooden blinds be used?

There is not one room without a place for wooden blinds. However, it is worth remembering that each of them has its own specificity, so they will fit slightly different models.

1. Wooden shutters in the living room

Although it may seem that the living room is a particularly demanding room, it also gives the greatest room for maneuver for people who are considering its arrangement. Both very classic solutions and slightly less conventional white wooden blinds that beautifully illuminate the space at our disposal will be perfect here. The shutters in the living room can be matched to the interior style. However, there is nothing to prevent them from being used as a contrasting element. If our living room is not too big, we may consider choosing more delicate bamboo blinds instead of the classic wooden model.

2. Wooden shutters in the kitchen

Wooden blinds are recommended both in closed and open kitchens. They are particularly suitable for heavily used kitchens. They protect against sunlight, but also contribute to the fact that the room does not heat up quickly on a sunny day. If we take into account the fact that the temperature in the kitchen is always slightly higher than in other parts of the house, we will certainly consider this an advantage of blinds made of wood.

3. Wooden blinds for the terrace

Wooden blinds are perfect for sheltered terraces, with a roof or other form of shelter that protects the space against changing weather conditions. The decision to place them involves a lot of care related to keeping them clean, but it also entails a number of benefits that cannot be underestimated. Wooden blinds combine fantastically with terrace furniture made of wood, contributing to the fact that the space gains a warm, family character.

Wooden blinds in smart homes

manually operated wooden blinds are not the only one option on the market, we also have many electric models. The latter have become particularly popular in recent years, perfectly fitting into the concept of a smart home. People who reach for them emphasize that they do it with convenience in mind. The blinds made of wooden slats are quite heavy, so adjusting them manually can be tiring. Using the remote control or a special app to raise and lower them and increase or decrease the spacing between the louver slats is extremely convenient. By analyzing the capabilities of electric wooden blinds, you can quickly find out that they improve not only the comfort of use.

An important advantage of the blinds as an element of a smart home is also the improvement of the safety of its inhabitants. It has been known for a long time that thieves are deterred not by fancy alarms, but by a simulation of the presence of household members. Lighting control may be insufficient in this context, but if, in addition, systematic changes in the setting of the blinds can be observed, it is hard to believe that a living person who is at home is not responsible for them.

Electric shutters also provide a higher level of thermal insulation. After all, we can program them so that they block access to sunlight when the temperature in the room exceeds a certain value. There is also nothing to prevent the blinds from adjusting to the time of day or even the number of people in the room.

Custom made wooden blinds

Analyzing the offer prepared by the Knall online store, you can see the dominance of models with standard sizes. However, they are certainly not the only ones we can decide on. In some circumstances, made to measure wooden blinds turn out to be a much better option. Initially, this proposal raises some doubts because it is associated with higher purchase costs. However, the price of a custom-made wooden blind does not have to be excessive, and there are at least a few arguments for the decision to carefully measure the window cover.

  • A custom-made blind is better suited to the window, which can be appreciated especially when it is characterized by non-standard dimensions.
  • Models prepared for individual order can be personalized, making them more visually interesting, they can also have less conventional colors.
  • Custom-made wooden blinds are usually of a higher quality than standard commercially available solutions.

When ordering blinds to size, you can expect professional support relating not only to the selection of the components of the window cover, but also to its assembly. This reduces the risk of problems with the subsequent use of the blinds.

Wooden blinds are a perfect combination of modernity and classic. They are stylish and beautiful, but you can count on them also when you want to use modern technologies. They are unmatched in large rooms, but it is difficult to take your eyes off them also when they appear in smaller spaces. There is no place where they would not fit. All this means that their growing popularity is no surprise to anyone today.
