Scandinavia in Interior Design and Lifestyle
Our series on fashion trends in interior design concludes with a trend that many hailed as the standout of 2019: New Nordic. This approach extends beyond mere interior arrangement. It draws inspiration from the Danish "hygge" philosophy. While "hygge" translates to "comfort," it encompasses more than that — it captures coziness, a sense of contentment, and the comfort of being alone or with others. It emphasizes the simple pleasures: spending time with friends, unwinding with a book or movie, and simply relaxing at home.
In the New Nordic paradigm, a home is a sanctuary. It's where we recuperate and shield ourselves, gearing up for the challenges of the next day. It strikes a balance between our professional and personal lives. While it draws from the Scandinavian style, it introduces more vibrancy, catering to those who find the traditional Scandinavian look somewhat monotonous.
New Nordic Characteristics
The Scandinavian style has been a frontrunner in interior design for many years. New Nordic certainly pays homage to this tradition but introduces nuances that make it distinct and arguably more refined.
New Nordic embraces the Scandinavian staples of natural materials like wood, linen, wool, leather, and stone. It champions both minimalism and functionality. But the primary emphasis is on comfort and fostering a homely ambiance that soothes its occupants. Imagine plush armchairs, cozy blankets, and the soft glow from a fireplace or candles – it's the little details that stand out.
The color palette leans towards beiges, creams, whites, and subtle greys. It's common practice to opt for the same color for both walls and windows. However, New Nordic isn't shy to introduce fresh colors that punctuate the prevailing brightness. Matte black, for instance, is a favorite for countertops, kitchen cabinet fronts, lamps, furniture handles, and even picture frames. Additionally, patterned wallpapers offer a fresh twist, adorning an entire wall or just a section.
Wood, a significant element, is primarily showcased on floors, usually light and raw. The furniture, predominantly wooden, prioritizes functionality. Superfluous decor, which doesn't serve a practical purpose, is omitted. Sofas and armchairs are clothed in natural fabrics, epitomizing comfort. Draping them are essential throws or blankets, complemented by cushions – again, with a focus on natural materials.
In conclusion, while the New Nordic style is underscored by cool hues, it's the infusion of contrasting elements that makes it inviting. The emphasis is on celebrating the mundane and crafting spaces conducive to relaxation.
